ELC courses

Our courses are designed to be practical, efficient and to encourage you to improve your English. They are well planned by our experienced and enthusiastic teachers, lively and fun, for you to make fast progress in English. All courses will allow you to activate your passive English and build on what you already know. A positive attitude to study, determination and motivation will help you gain your goal.

All students take an ‘ELC’ online placement test together with a student profile needs analysis, to determine their level of ability in English. They then join the group appropriate to their level. A Progress Test may be taken and must be passed before you move up a level. Alternatively you may be upgraded, by special recommendation, from your teacher.

A graded ‘ELC’ Certificate showing your CEFR English language level and ability in the 6 skills ( Speaking, Pronunciation, Listening, Reading, Writing and Motivation / Attitude) will be given at the end of the course – click to see a sample

‘Many students come to ‘ELC’ on a Short Term Study Visa for 6 or 11 months to prepare for the IELTS test to enable them to enter Higher Education or University in the UK.
Students who need a UKVI CAS visa for Higher Education or University in the UK will need an IELTS score of 4.0 in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The IELTS test must now be taken at an approved UKVI Secure English Language Test (SELT) centre in the UK or in your country – check: See PDF ..
The ‘ELC’ range of English language courses may lead to the following examinations e.g. IELTS, Cambridge (KET, PET, FCE)
Those students wishing to follow an IELTS and / or other examination course e.g. Cambridge First should have an Intermediate level of English equivalent to a minimum IELTS score of 4.5.
This is particularly if they wish to join a University International Foundation Programme in the future which will normally require and entry score of 5.5 or higher.
A University Masters (MSc) course will normally require an IELTS entry level score of 6.5.
A doctorate (PhD) will require an IELTS entry score of minimum of 7.0 or higher.’

Students can start their courses on any day of the week and do not need to buy any books. ‘ELC’ provides all hand outs and materials which will include photo copies of standard texts, specifically prepared materials by ‘ELC’, use of the Internet and audio systems.

Courses are arranged during the morning and the afternoon.
Au pairs and busy people may attend classes 2, 3, or 4 days per week. ‘ELC’ has a safe and secure private bicycle park.

Thank you ‘ELC’ for the period I spent with you. It was one of the best experience of my life. I would like to greet Mr McBurney and fantastic teachers when I return to Reading.
