‘ELC’ History

‘ELC’ was originally established in 1973 as The Language Learning Centre (LLC) by Mr S Mc Burney, The Principal. This was the year when Britain joined ‘The Common Market’ now named The European Union (EU). LLC provided English and Foreign language training, interpreting and translation services in 20 languages. Clients have included, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Diplomatic Service), Ministry of Defence, HM Police Service, many Foreign Embassies and International companies.

The Principal

Mr S Mc Burney was educated in England, Ireland and France. He is available to discuss students and parents needs and problems and to find solutions. He is a member of Reading Abbey Rotary club and on the International Committee. As an Irishman he enjoys rugby, fishing and teaching using the ‘laugh and learn’ osmosis method!

Who comes to ELC and Why?
Our students of all ages (18 – 88) come from ‘all the corners of the earth’ – we frequently have 10 to 15 different nationalities studying at ‘ELC’. They study for personal development, examination success, to prepare for entry to British Universities and Institutions and for better job prospects.

The Staff

‘ELC’ staff are friendly. They have recognised professional language teaching qualifications and have had the experience of learning foreign languages themselves.
They are experienced in the teaching of English to foreign students and conversant with the latest methods ideas and materials available. They are sensitive to student needs and the difficulties experienced by students coming from different cultural and educational backgrounds.
